Polyethylene glycol derived carbon quantum dots nanofluids: An excellent lubricant for diamond-like carbon film/bearing steel contact

Abstract Polyethylene glycol derived carbon quantum dots nanofluids were synthesized via a slow thermal oxidation process. The size of was ca. 2 nm and had decreasing trend with the increase time. When used as lubricant in diamond-like film/bearing steel interface, achieved an ultra-low friction coefficient ( ? ? 0.02), much lower than that original polyethylene = 0.12). worn surface analyses revealed could effectively inhibit tribo-oxidation counterpart occurred under lubrication, hence reduced abrasion component friction. Especially, poly-hydroxyl oxidized species induced hydroxyl-rich sliding interface their tribochemical reactions surfaces, which promoted adsorption molecules on surfaces. Along mild corrosion wear counterface, this shifted boundary lubrication to mixed/film regime, thereby achieving coefficient. above results suggest should be quite excellent candidate for solid-liquid synergy based films.
